I Am Sapiosexual-Urvarshi Rautela
Unplugging Urvashi, the Enchantress
A compulsive head-turner!
That’s how magnetic Urvashi (Rautela) is… And that’s what has floored panels after panels of those toffee-nosed, hard-headed, hoity-toity Judges at various Beauty-contests to give her the Crown… Possibly, the winner of most Beauty titles amongst Indian girls to this day, what with having wrested ‘Miss India Universe’ (twice); ‘Miss Asian Supermodel’; ‘Miss Tourism Queen’; ‘Winner – ‘I Am She’ and other such, she has really done the country proud time and again at the biggest of such platforms…
And today, she is part of the Indian Entertainment with already big time Films in her kitty and Television being not too distant a probability…
GR8! Brings you an exclusive with the irresistible Urvashi… Read on…
What is glamour to you?
Glamour to me is confidence - it's about what you wear, how you talk, how you carry yourself and, of course, the projection of your entire personality. And it's not a prerogative of a privileged few - anyone can create glamour!
Fine - tell us, what was it that triggered the belief in you that you are Beauty-pageant material? Was it the 'Mirror', or was it something or someone else?
Well, my looks have always made my friends and family put pressure on me for that. Also, I used to love watching Beauty-pageant shows, though it hardly occurred to me that I, myself, would win a lot of titles therein. You know, I'm the only Indian girl who has won so many titles!
Achha, how does one define 'Beauty'? Is that just the physical attributes or there is something more to it than that?
Beauty is definitely beyond physical appearance - it's the way your thought processes shape up. And you know what, to capture ‘Beauty’; first of all you should look into the eyes!
You've had a small-town upbringing - tell us, are the perceptions and perspectives of ‘Beauty’ different there than, say, in a Metro?
For me, it was the same! Particularly in my family, where they're all so broadminded!
At times, it has been found that girls, growing up in small towns, are subjected to a lot of duress, like, eve-teasing, bad behaviour, even stalking... how was it for you?
Yes - I've faced eve-teasing... also, I was tall, so they called me by all sorts of weird names, too. But all such challenges are OK, I guess - facing them would only make you stronger!
Achha, tell us, how was the li'lUrvashi, then - Introvert? Extrovert?Defiant?Docile? Prankster... or what?
Oh, soo very 'Introvert'! As a child, I've been shy, quiet and difficult to open up. But at the same time, I always had leadership qualities, too–you know, I was the head-girl in School!
Were you the kind of child who would be the centre of attraction at the parties?
Always!
(she says with mock hauteurand then breaks into a titter...)
Andhow were the environs at home? Strict & regimented...Or lax & indulgent?
You know what, my parents are cooler than me! Once in Dubai, there were different wines and drinks served at a party and I just looked away, but my Mom asked me to try some. Of course, they can be strict when need be, but largely, they are so cool and supportive!
Have they never been anxious about you?
Well, when I shifted base to Delhi, they were anxious and protective as to how I would manage on my own. But once I proved myself - they were chilled! They believed in me and this only led to a stronger bonding between us!
Did you delve in extra-curricular activities in School?
Oh, lots& lots! I was always an Athlete - so be it 'Kho-Kho', 'Kabbaddi' or whatever, I've played ’em all. You know, on the sets, when my costars like, Riteish, Genelia, Aftab, Vivek, Mishti etc. discuss 'Sports', I'd rattle off this long list of what all I've played and they would all be taken aback! Really, I have won more than 50 trophies!
But was there resentment at home at these digressions from Studies?
Not at all! That's because while I pursued my passion, I always came up tops in my Studies as well!

Were you comfortable with boys in the School or would keep them at bay?
Well, I was so girly-girly, really... I had an all-girls gang… and we’d always have a blast!
Tell us about your earliest crush...
Zayn Malik (theBritish crooner)!
You started Modelling at a very young age - how did that come about?
Yes, I was only 16... I think it had a lot to do with word of mouth. And touch wood, it all started so grandly –you know, my first campaign was for LG, no less!
When the day came for the Beauty-contest and you were judged for your 'Beauty' - tell us, was there an initial nervousness and how was it conquered?
Aren't we all nervous at the outset? But then, it's all about confidence. To cap it, it was the biggest platform ever - a big time personality test! More than nervous, I was excited at it!
There are any numbers of detractors out there, pouring cynicism about Beauty-contests - how do you react to such negativity?
Whatever anyone says or opines, it's the biggest platform ever and that says it all!
How about Big Screen? Did you take to it because it is often considered customary to follow after winning a Beauty-contest... or you always thought you had a talent for that?
All I can say is - it came naturally to me!
Despite your forays into Beauty-contests, Modelling etc., it must have been a never-before experience to be there before a Camera, surrounded by all those monstrous lights and listening to the Director booming - 'Action!' Tell us about the butterflies in the stomach...
Uh, for me, it was a chilled & fun experience - a bit nervous, but way too exciting!
Films often throw up challenges at you in terms of exposing, lip-locks,steamy scenes etc. Are you comfortable with all of those and have the confidence to carry them out spontaneously?
Well, being an Actor, it is important to carry out whatever the role demands, confidently. I've donned a swimsuit in 'Great Grand Masti'…and it’s all like, setting an example, really!
Name your dream Costar - both nationally and internationally...
Brad Pitt (12 Years A Slave), Robert Pattinson (Harry Potter- 4)... and nearer home - the three Khans and HrithikRoshan!
Fine! Tell us, what is 'Fashion' to you?
An expression of personality! And I just lovebeing fashionable!
Should Fashion mirror one's individuality or force one to conform to what others are doing at a point of time?
Well, I don't believe in following trends!
Would you say 'Fashion' is your 'obsession' or a 'personality enhancement'?
Personality-enhancement!
What, according to you, should be the Man-Woman equation?
Skip the question!... There're too many, in fact!
How about Male Chauvinism?
I believe in gender-equality!
And how do you react to the Bra-burning Feminists?
I don't support them! We aren't here to prove that we are superior. Feminism is about your belief in yourself - it's to maintain peace, not to fight!
OK – tell us, how important is the 'Physical' in love?
Very important!
Can you ever go in for a 'Live-in'? Or a Marital-commitment is a must for you?
Commitment is important!
What is your take on one-night-stands?
I don't support them! But, then, to each its own!
Do you see Television? What type?
Well, I used to see 'Friends' (NBC), 'Vampire Diaries' (CW) and 'Dora, the Explorer' (Nickelodeon)... Currently, it's the ‘Game of Thrones’ (HBO)!
Achha, what can make you do a TV Show... and would it be 'Reality' or 'Fiction'?
Any! I'll do what I feel like at that point of time!
What is a 'turn-on' for you in a man?
I am Sapiosexual! So, he has to be intelligent, smell good, be high on hygiene, respect my parents and yes - have a good sense of humour!
And a 'turn-off'?
Bad odour, dumb, unhygienic!
Define your 'Dream Date' and picture for us the setting & ambience for a Romantic evening…
Not being diplomatic, but I haven't really thought about it... err,a Candle-light Dinner… along drive, a walk along the beach –in fact, I’d want all of that! On second thoughts –‘Switzerland’ would also be fun!
OK - one thing you like about UrvashiRautela?
I think it’s - loving myself... and respecting, too!
And one thing you don't?
I trust people easily!
Give a piece of advice to Urvashi...
Just be the way you are... you've achieved a lot, but still there’s l o n g way to go... and never let success go to your head!
Tell us a song that defines you...
Aww... that's a difficult one... umm, maybe I just tell you my current favourite - 'I want TeraIshq...' - so there!
That’s the ‘Great Grand Masti’ number, where she plays a ‘Ghost’…
And if that defines her, then surely, we have a persona there, brimming with Ishq, i.e., ‘Love’… The last half an hour with her has only corroborated the fact that there is more to Urvashi than merely Bikini-perfect body contours… Indeed, behind that milky skin, chiselled features and pearly smile, and behind that oomph & allure, there lurks a heart & soul of delicate sensibilities…
You, too, must’ve sensed that…
It doesn’t need Chinese Arithmetic to sense that – does it?
