A sumptuous smile could contribute galore to the fantabulous first impression.. The charismatic radiance of a bright captivating smile is beyond the multifarious cosmetic make ups or hair styles required for the enhancement of any personality. Thus , it is highly desideratum to be a strong considerate of one’s orthodontic problems and taking necessary precautions to maintain the captivating smile which has the caliber to win over millions of hearts.

The space or gap between two teeth which appears most often between the two upper front teeth is Diastema. Diastema is a derivation from a greek term diastanai which implies “Standing apart." Diastema can be a result of several issues, For eg - the jaw bone being disproportionate to the teeth will automatically give birth to the needless space. Gaps because of small or missing teeth allows other teeth to spread out, making the row irregular and de-shaped.

There can be aplenty reason for Diastema to occur. One common habit contributing to diastema is thumb sucking. This mere childhood habit tends to pull the front teeth forward, creating gaps, making the shape of the teeth less attractive. Swallowing habits could also contribute to this not so attractive process. An incorrect swallowing reflex can develop spaces and create room for diastema. Some people develop a different reflex known as a tongue thrust, when they swallow, the tongue presses against the front teeth. Over the time because of the pressure pushing the front teeth forward the space comes to existence.

Basically, Diastema occurs because of the discrepancy between the teeth and the jaw .The misalliance transpires because of the spaces being caused by a tongue thrust habit or periodontal disease which tends to expand or grow with time. As a result, teeth gets loosened, causing discomfort or pain, particularly during biting or chewing.

Due to advancements and escalations in dentistry, Diastema is no longer an incurable issue for the one, who wish to obtain a pleasing positive smile. Contemporarily, Diastema is an adjustable dental condition which not only includes traditional braces but a lot more. The course of treatments highly relies on veneers, dental bands, direct dental bonding and also cosmetic dental surgeries . There are several other methods of closing teeth gaps which can be adapted apart from this:

Bonding is one of the treatment for closing the Gap. The easiest, most cost effective, immediate way to close the space between your front teeth is with composite bonding which are known as fillings which requires virtually no tooth preparation and can be removed at will.

Veneers are an option for closing gaps, enhance the shape, or change the color of teeth that do not respond well to whitening procedures. They are ultra-thin, custom-made porcelain laminates that are bonded directly to the teeth. One might require more extensive dental repair, if they have a space because of a missing teeth, which includes dental implants, a bridge or a partial denture.

If the gap is caused by periodontal disease, then the circumstance necessitates a periodontal treatment by a dentist or gum specialist. It is highly difficult to prevent spaces without treatment, if the reason for a space is a missing tooth or any incongruity between the teeth and the jaw size.

The process of fixing diastema doesn’t come to a standstill or any conclusion post treatment .One has to incorporate personal and primitive measures post treatment , in order to maintain good oral health . To prevent periodontal disease and its related bone loss, regular flossing and brushing is a prerequisite along with seeking dental checkups on a regular basis for that splendiferous and dazzling smile.
