Independence Day with 'Lagaan' on & pictures!
On the eve of Independence Day, &pictures - one of India’s premium mass Hindi movie channel, heightens the patriotic mood in its viewers with the story of a simple Indian peasant who triumphs over the malicious British in Lagaan on Friday, 14th August, 8 PM. Comprising of a stellar cast of Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh in lead roles, Lagaan is the only third Indian film to be nominated for the Academy Award for ‘Best Foreign Language Film’ after Mother India and Salaam Bombay.
Written and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, Lagaan is a set in the village of Champaner in 1893, torn apart by drought and burdened with the despicable lagaan- a tax levied by the Britishers. The region’s commander, Capt. Andrew Russell (Paul Blackthorne) imposes an unprecedented land tax on its citizens. Outraged, Bhuvan (Aamir Khan), a rebellious farmer, rallies the villagers to publicly oppose the tax. Russell offers a novel way to settle the dispute: he challenges Bhuvan and his men to a game of cricket, a sport completely foreign to India. If Bhuvan and his men can defeat Russell's team, the tax will be repealed.
Will the villagers win the match and get rid of the preposterous taxes levied on them or will they fight the British rule through the game of cricket, win and get rid of the taxes altogether?
