An ode to Naseeruddin Shah with 'Nishant'...
India’s only classic movie channel, Zee Classic, driven with its core proposition ‘Woh Zamaana Kare Deewana’ is all set to telecast renowned filmmaker Shyam Benegal’s realistic and ruthless ‘Nishant’ on Friday, August 7th at 6:30 PM. A hard hitting social drama that went on to win the National Award for the best feature film celebrates the life and works of acting powerhouse Naseeruddin Shah as part of the channel’s ongoing property ‘New Wave Cinema’. Nishant touted as ‘the ultimate acting school experience’ also stars actor extraordinaire Shabana Azmi along with Amrish Puri, Girish Karnad, Anant Nag, Mohan Agashe and Smita Patil in her debut performance. The film portraying the state of rural India, focuses on the power of local elites and the sexual exploitation of women during feudalism in India.
Vishwam (Naseeruddin Shah) is the youngest brother of the powerful and influential village Zamindar (Amrish Puri). Vishwam is married to Rukmani (Smita Patil), and unlike his elder brothers, does not indulge in alcohol or women. The situation turns tumultuous when a new schoolmaster (Girish Karnad), along with his wife Susheela (Shabana Azmi) enter the village. Vishwam is instantly attracted to her and unable to get her out of his mind. Noticing this, his brothers abduct Sushila in the middle of the night from her home.
Inspired from a true story, Nishant is brutal yet compelling social drama that leaves the viewers both enraged and aghast.
