Mera Saaya directed by ‘Indian Hitchcock’ Raj Khosla was a compelling remake of successful Marathi cinema called ‘Pathlag’. The story follows the life of Rakesh (Sunil Dutt), a successful lawyer, comes home to find his beautiful wife Geeta (Sadhana) succumbing to a fatal illness and dying in his arms. The grief of desolated Rakesh rises multifold when an inspector informs him that a woman, who survived a police encounter with a dacoit's gang, is claiming to be his wife Geeta. The police believe that a notorious criminal Raina (Sadhana in double role) is using her striking resemblance to Rakesh's late wife as her bait to freedom and urges him to take up the case as prosecuting attorney. Then begins a baffling court case where Rakesh attempts to prove the reality of an imposter who isn’t the one he claims she is.
