DOWNTON ABBEY

Matthew Crawley, a 27-year-old solicitor and new heir to the Grantham earldom and estate, arrives at Downton Abbey with his mother, the long-widowed Isobel. He is reluctant to adapt to his new mode of life but his mother feels that they should not satisfy the family's assumptions about their class and behaviour. Matthew ridicules the prospect of marrying one of the daughters which Mary overhears when she visits and is attracted to her. Violet and Lady Mary are openly hostile towards Isobel and Matthew
